Rachel’s approach to physiotherapy focuses on combining manual therapy and specialized exercise prescription to help each individual reach their goals. She strives to create an environment where each client can share their experiences surrounding their symptoms, to understand how those experiences are influencing their pain, and to work together to create a treatment plan specific to each client’s personal movement goals.

She received her Master of Physical Therapy from McMaster University, since then she has had the privilege of working with clients of all ages and through a wide variety of injuries and conditions. She is currently working on her Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Therapy Physiotherapy Program. In order to better serve clients she has also taken further education in vestibular rehabilitation, athletic taping and Functional Movement Assessment, as well as being certified to provide Acupuncture. Most recently she attended a course delving deeper into our understanding of pain and what strategies we can implement to best avoid letting pain stop people from enjoying what they love. She is passionate about providing evidence-based treatment that is individual to each client.

Outside of work she enjoys playing basically any sport but especially softball (for the past several summers this has included playing in St. George). She also enjoys hiking and exploring with her German Shepherd, Clyde.

Physiotherapy can look different for everyone, depending on your injury and goals.  The following are different techniques that may be used as part of your treatment plan. 

  • Manual therapy: Your treatment will often include some form of hands-on manual therapy. Depending on your goals, specific techniques will be chosen to improve mobility, decrease pain, and get you back to your desired activity. Techniques used may consist of joint and nerve mobilization, myofascial and active release, traction, and manipulation.  
  • Exercises Perspiration: Exercise has been shown to be one of the most effective ways to recover from an injury, decrease pain, and improve activity tolerance. Based on your assessment, an individualized exercise program will be created for you. Some exercises may be performed in clinic, others will be sent with you for homework.  At STG Health and Wellness we have access to many exercise machines that allow for safe, effective loading of injured tissues to help you recover as quickly as possible.
  • Taping: Tape can be used to offload injured tissues, increase joint stability, and enforce new movement patterns. It can also be used to protect recovering tissues in the transition back to sports and more demanding activities
  • Pre and Post op Physiotherapy: Physiotherapy before surgery can help ensure your recovery post surgery is as quick and complete as possible. Post surgery, physiotherapy is often a key component of effective rehabilitation, getting you back to your normal routine safely and efficiently.
  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture originates in traditional Chinese medicine and it involves inserting thin needles into specific points to stimulate your body’s natural healing process. Acupuncture may be used in your physiotherapy treatment session as a compliment to the other techniques used.
  • Vestibular Rehabilitation: Vertigo can have a hugely negative effect on your ability to function on a day-to-day basis. Based on assessment findings at your first visit, vestibular rehabilitation can effectively treat vertigo. The most common sources of vertigo can be eliminated in as little as one or two treatments.
  • Dizziness and feelings of being unbalanced are also common symptoms connected to concussions, post-concussion syndrome, and neck injuries (as well as many other conditions). The vestibular system often plays a role in these symptoms and specific exercises and manual techniques can be used to help alleviate them.
